Titration

The yarns intended for the manufacture of fabrics come in different thicknesses, which is therefore necessary
be able to measure them. Since it is practically not possible to measure the diameter due to the easy
deformation of their section, titration is used to distinguish them.

The titration of yarns is based on the knowledge of two quantities: la LENGTH (L) and the WEIGHT (P).
By relating these two quantities we have values called:
– Securities (T) in the method of direct titration
– Numbers (N) in the method of indirect titration.
The DIRECT METHOD, said to fixed length and variable weight, is given by the ratio of weight divided
the length (T=P/L). This method is commonly used for all yarns made from fibers
continuous (silk, rayon, nylon, etc.).
The title Tex (Tex) indicates the weight in grams of 1000 meters of yarn. For example, Tex 1 means that
1000 meters weigh 1 gram.
This titration method is called universal and should replace all titrations, especially
of the indirect system (N).
The title Decitex (Dtex) indicates the weight in grams of 10,000 meters of yarn or yarn. This method
it is used for burrs or multi-strand yarns. For example, Dtex 1 means 10,000 meters weighs
1 gram (drool).
The title Denari (Den) indicates the weight in grams of 9000 meters of yarn or yarn. It is used for burrs, yarns
multiburr and for silk. For example, Den 1 means that 9,000 meters weighs 1 gram (drool).
With the direct method, the figure indicating the count is higher the thicker the yarn (or the
burr), the fineness being expressed as a function of the variable weight compared to a fixed length.

Others

The INDIRECT METHOD, also called with fixed weight and variable length, is given by the ratio between
the length and weight (N=L/D). Titration by this method (N) is commonly employed
for all yarns made with discontinuous fibers (wool, cotton, rayon staple, etc.).
The most used indirect titrations in the Prato area are:
• metric and kilogrammetric titration;
• English cotton titration;
• Prato titration.

There are also the English count of carded wool, the English count of combed wool, the
English titration of flax and hemp.
The metric number (Nm) indicates how many meters of yarn there are in 1 gram. For example, Nm 1 means
1 meter of yarn on 1 gram.

The kilogram number (Nkgm) indicates how many meters of yarn there are in 1000 grams. To
example, Nkgm 1000 means 1000 meters of yarn per 1000 grams.
This count is also used in the Biella area for coarse yarns. For example the Nm 7 is called
also Nkgm 7000 or simply 7000.

The English cotton number (Ne, Nec or Ne cotton) indicates how many skeins of 768 meters (equal to
840 yards) there are on 454 grams (equal to 1 pound) of yarn. For example Ne 1 means that 1 skein
of 768 meters of yarn weighs 454 grams.
This titration is used for cotton and is also used in Italy.
The Prato number (NP) indicates how many skeins of 583 meters (equal to 1000 Tuscan arms) there are in 339.5 grams (equal to one Tuscan pound) of yarn. For example, Np 1 means that 1 skein of
583 meters weighs 339.5 grams.
The Prato number is divided, in the decimal part, into quarters (1/4, 1/2, 3/4) and is used in the district
Prato only for carded yarns.
From the above, the number being a function of the length varies with respect to the weight
fixed, the higher the number the finer the yarn.
